Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Therapy

Extra-Corporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ECSWT) is a non-invasive treatment.  Post treatment you may experience some pain and discomfort in the treated heel for 1 to 2 weeks.  This pain and discomfort is manageable by using over-the-counter pain medication as prescribed by your doctor.  Pain and discomfort from plantar fasciitis should gradually diminish over 3 to 6 months as the body naturally heals itself in response to the treatment.

The following post treatment instructions are recommended to achieve maximum benefit from the treatment.

  • Most patients can immediately resume a "normal" pre-treatment level of activity after the effects of anesthesia have worn off.
  • Restrain from any stressful activity or heavy exercise including sports, running, or heavy housework for 2-3 weeks.
  • Apply ice to the treated heel, on and off for 30 minute intervals for the first 24-48 hours.
  • If you should feel pain or discomfort, use Tylenol or a pain medication as prescribed by your doctor.  AVOID USING ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDICATION SUCH AS ASPIRIN, ADVIL OR MOTRIN.
  • Avoid completely flat shoes including slippers and sandals.  If you are currently using orthotics or other heel cushions/shoe modifications, continue their use as prescribed.
  • Having performed your treatment, we are interested in your prompt recovery.  Please cooperate with us by following the above instructions.  If you need to reach Dr. DeLeonibus please do not hesitate to call one of the following numbers: Office-410-266-7666 or Cell-443-223-0940.
